Though it may seem perplexingly odd at first, Bertrand Guyon's focus on satisfying pleasures of culinary experiences for Schiaparelli SS16 is in fact a familiar theme to the Parisian brand, and has even been referenced in Elsa Schiaparelli's (House founder) autobiography Shocking Life, in which she writes "Eating well gives a spectacular joy of life and contributes immensely to goodwill and happy companionship. It is of great importance to the morale.".
Guyon held no reservations and went to town with this theme, translating food, cutlery and even napkins into couture gowns, which, for some, may be too literal. One can't help but be reminded of the cups and dishes from Beauty and the Beast.
But underneath all the colorful conversation lies designs of impeccable technical skill and quality. Lightness, transparency and sensuality caress the Schiaparelli woman, especially at the waist, while at the same time exposing arms, shoulders and chests. Monochromatic floor-length numbers near the end of the collection transformed models to princesses in their own right, balancing the collection and bringing us back to reality.
