Sweat-Proof Summer Makeup

Ahh summer, it’s that time of the year when it’s actually suitable to bust out those coral orange lipsticks without looking like a clown.  But unfortunately this “power” comes at a cost. With the summer heat and humidity and sweat and the sun and the heat (yes, I said heat twice because it is HOT out there right now), it’s a challenge to keep your makeup looking fresh and flawless throughout the day, because lets face it, we’ve all had this experience; we put on makeup first in the morning and it’s looking pretty good, and by the end of the day, you are looking like a sweaty, messy grease ball and when I say I want my face to have a glow, I don’t mean it that literally.

Oily skin is sadly a symptom that comes hand-in-hand with the summer heat, but worry not, for I am here to make sure that your makeup stays fresh and that you can always take flawless summer selfies. Here are some of my favorite sweat proof products that’ll be sure to last through a hot summer day.

1. Primers

Primers are a great way to ensure makeup longevity and they come in all sorts of formulas for different skin types; from enlarged pores to oily skin. For summer, it’s best to stick with a mattefying primer, which can combat oiliness to stop your makeup from slipping and sliding all over your face. One of my favorite primers is the Benefit POREfessional.

This lightweight primer has a silicone base that will fill in fine lines and pores, and will also leave your skin feeling silky smooth. It is also enriched with vitamin E to give extra nourishment to the skin whilst leaving it matte and shine-free throughout the day.

2. Tinted Moisturizers

Personally, I don’t tend to wear foundations during the summer because the consistency can be too thick and uncomfortable to wear in the heat. However, to even out skin tone and cover up any discoloration or small blemishes, I love to use tinted moisturisers. They provide a sheer coverage, enough to last the day and won’t leave your skin feeling heavy and oily. Fortunately I have my trusty NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer, to do just that for me.

This tinted moisturizer provides effortless coverage that perfects your skin; leaving it feeling soft with a dewy finish, perfect to cheat that summer glow. Coverage is buildable depending on your preference and a little goes a long way with this product, and best of all? It stays all day!

3. Blush and Bronzers

If you’re pale like me and you can never get that perfect sun-kissed glow or that coveted shade of flushed rosy cheeks, you can fake it (like I do) with some blush and a little bronzer that I lightly dust over my face. For blush, I like to use Urban Decay’s Afterglow 8-Hour Powder Blush right on the apples of my cheeks and Benefit’s Hoola Bronzer as a light contour around the highpoints of my face.

This blush really does last 8 hours (maybe even more) and the pigmentation of this blush is amazing! You only need to run your brush through the pan very lightly to pick up enough pigment for your face (I learnt this hard way, first time I used it, I swirled my brush all around the pan and ended up looking like a clown). This range from Urban Decay also comes in 12 shades, so you’re bound to find your perfect summer flush in this collection somewhere.

Matte bronzers are my favorite things to use, as they are so versatile. They can be used as a light contour or as a transition shade for blending out your eyeshadow. This matte bronzer by Benefit blends like a dream into your skin and allows you to fake that perfect beachy glow.

Tip: If contouring with bronzers, remember to use a matte one that has no shimmer and if you are prone to oily skin or have enlarged pores, stay away from shimmery bronzers, as the shimmer can enhance your pores and make you look shinier.

4. Highlighters

To bring light to the tops of your cheekbones and to really emphasize your healthy summer flush, highlighters are the way to go. Get your glow on by blending a creamy highlighter to the highpoints of your face to get that coveted dewy finish. My top picks for these have to be the Glossier Haloscope Highlighters.

Ladies, it’s time to get your glow on. This gorgeously creamy highlighter has just the right amount of shimmer in it to give you that perfect sheen. This product is easy to glide on and lasts pretty well throughout the day. It also comes in 2 tones (gold and pink) so for those of you who want to emphasise your bronze summer glow, Topaz (gold toned) is your perfect choice.

Bonus: These highlighters are also packed full of good ingredients like coconut oil and vitamin E. It’s paraben and cruelty free!

5. Mascara

On most nights during the summer, we are very tempted to stay up and binge watch our favorite TV shows (at least I do), and most of the time we give into that temptation, resulting in some very tired looking raccoon eyes (hello concealer), but to give our eyes that extra little lift, Tarte’s Light Camera Lashes is my best friend.

This black mascara by Tarte packs on volume and length for that perfect set of long-lasting fluttery eyelashes, not to mention the purple packaging looks adorable. My favorite thing about this product is the wand; it's so long and the bristles are dense, great for definition and separation.

6. Lips

Summer is probably the best time to have fun experimenting with colors. All colors are welcome, the brighter the better. However keeping them on your lips is struggle, but most lipsticks with a matte finish do tend to last longer. It was so difficult for me to pick my must-have summer shade, but I think it has to be MAC’s Tropic Tonic lipstick.

This bright lipstick is described as a full-powered coral, and it lives up to its name. This pink-toned coral looks beautiful with a tan, and emphasizes your pearly whites. The formula is smooth and creamy and glides on like a dream, and since it’s matte, it’s sure to last through the day (and into the night if needed).

Tip: Matte lipsticks tend to be a little drying, so be sure to wear some lipstick before application.
